That’s a question I often see on webmaster forums, and I am often surprised because anything free should get promoted automatically, but there are lot of free directories and getting webmasters to remember your directory’s name can be tough. Most webmasters will use a directory list and submit their websites to free directories one by one. Many others who submit to directories frequently will probably make their own list and keep it updated by syncing with a popular list of free directories.

By now you already know what you need to do to get more submissions to your directory:

1. Submit your directory to popular directory lists

2. Announce them on webmaster forums, most seo and webmaster forums will have a section for announcing directories

Now that we have covered the obvious steps, you can also consider following methods to increase your directory’s visibility.

1. Edit directory’s email template and use the name in email subject. Try to create a unique template and use directory’s name in email body.

2. Use a unique template on the directory, if your directory uses a free template and looks like 100s of other directories, webmasters can not be expected to remember your directory.

3. Provide additional webmaster resources on your directory. Tools like page rank checker, SERP checker etc. are a great addition to directories.

If you own a free directory, I would love to hear the methods you use to promote your directory in comments.
