The two popular methods to sculpt PR are dead and we are back to 2002-2003 when these methods were not being used. The are the two dead methods I am talking about:

  • Nofollowing links that you didn’t want PR to flow to
  • Using dynamic javascript links

As we have already heard that nofollowing links won’t work as well as it used to do earlier, does that still prevent me from nofollowing my privacy / disclaimer page? It shouldn’t. I will still advice people to work on internal PR flow but they should do it keeping in mind that it’s not as effective as it used to be 2 years ago.

Coming back to new or rather old methods for PR scultping; the one method that most SEOs used earlier before they got into more fancy stuff, it still works but require more thinking and efforts.

Minimize number of outbound links on your pages

It works specially well for directories because a directory’s homepage will typically have many links to internal categories. As an average 10+ categories (sometimes 15+) are listed on main page and 3 to 5 subcategories are also linked from first page taking the count to anywhere between 50 to 75 links. This could be easily reduced to 10-15 links by removing links from subcategory. It will result in your main categories getting a PR.

Who said getting PR on internal pages / categories is difficult, with the right approach it’s possible. I plan to get some backlinks for my internal categories pages soon.

The biggest one is that they do make me a few bucks just by putting up a new one. Now my problem is that I tend to overdo it and end up with more directories than I can spend my time promoting and keeping updated. My latest directory is a free general directory and it is taking too much of my time just reviewing the submitted sites. Plus seriously looking at actually opening not one, but two more directories! Today I decided that before I opened up any more directories, I would sell off three (3) of my present directories.

I put up a sales thread on several forums to sell these directories. One of the threads is at digital point forums and within a half hour of putting it up, I had sold one of the directories. So that leaves me with two directories I want to sell off asap. One directory is my oldest bidding directory that because of hosting problems, not once but twice can you believe it, was down and up and down and finally back up. In all that, the directory lost all page rank, it was a page rank 3, and finally got back some page rank to end up now with a page rank of one. I looked at this directory very close and decided that I really did not want to promote it as hard as I do my other two. And with that, I put it up for sale. And at a fire sale price! Every directory owner surely has the same problem as I do when it comes to dumb submitters? You know, you have a directory that is a say cat niche and only sites you accept are those about cats. And bam, you get submissions from webmasters who do not bother to see your niche, or read your guidelines, and submit sites about dogs, porn sites, and more.

I only have at present (maybe not too much longer as I am trying to sell it) one directory that accepts free submissions. It is a directory about directories. From the main page to the submit page, it says this is a directory of directories. At the submit page, it states plainly “Failure to follow the “guidelines” may result in your Web site being declined” “IF YOUR SITE IS NOT A DIRECTORY, IT IS REJECTED OUT OF HAND! THIS IS FOR DIRECTORIES ONLY! NO OTHER SITES ARE ALLOWED!” and yet every day, I get stupid webmasters who waste their time and my time submitting all kinds of sites that are not directories.

Now I realize that a lot of those submissions come via software programs that search around for any directory that has free submissions. And also those dumb manual submitters who add every free directory they can find to their lists. And webmasters use these submission softwares without bothering to check the directories in them! Same with all those webmasters who spend their bucks on manual submitters who love to submit to any directory that is free.

Okay, so much for my rant on idiot webmasters and submitters! Some more directories today to check out and yes, if the guidelines say to submit only relevant sites, please make sure your site is relevant to the directory.

It is hard getting directory owners to want to have their directories reviewed! I believe most directory owners do not want to spend any money promoting their directories. These are the ones who throw up directories, and only want free ways to promote their directories. Yet they want other webmasters and directory owners to spend money at their directory! Go figure, but today that is the way it is.

I have always done reviews for directories at too low a price, but still too many won’t spend a few bucks to get their directory reviewed or to get visitors or a backlink. But yet, open up a FREE directory and all these so-called directory owners who won’t spend a penny promoting their directory will jump all over FREE! Repeating above, there are too many directory owners in this business who should not be!! My opinion, and I am sure that is shared with a lot of the good directory owners who work at and spend on to promote their directories.

Okay, I will rant some more on another day about how I see the directory business and the directory owners who do not have a clue. Here are some directories to check out.
