Where should I host my web directories? – That’s a question that new directory owners ask everyday. Some directory owners were surprised to find that their web hosting provider had simply disabled their websites because supposedly their directory was consuming too many resources. The question about finding a cheap but reliable hosting provider haunts every webmaster’s mind but more so if you own a directory.

Compare web hosts

I compare features and prices of any product that I am buying and recommend the same for directory owners thinking of switching to a new cheap host. You can host a relatively new directory in a shared hosting environment but for any established directory that gets 500 or more visits per day my recommendation will be to use a VPS. A dedicated host would be an overkill unless you are planning to host a directory network.

You should compare and read web hosting reviews from an authentic and unbiased source. You need to ask yourself if you want to host other sites on this hosting. What kind of data transfer requirements would your directory and site will have? Do you want to pay extra for some features that you are never going to use?

A directory dedicated to web hosting

Now that I am talking about finding a good hosting provider how can I not mention a web hosting directory. I am not going to review the directory in detail because they provide editorial content and I don’t see a submission option. Nevertheless it has all the details for comparing diffeferent type of web hosts.

Do keep in mind that configuring redirect rules and SEO friendly URLs won’t be all the easy on IIS though it’s a breeze with Apache. Do let me know if you know more web hosting directories.

All webmasters submit to a ton of general directories. Some have just categories, so no drilling down to find sites are required by visitors and other general directories have sub-categories that do require drilling down by visitors to find sites. I have seen a lot of general directories that have sub-categories in the sub-categories. Now there is a hard one for visitors, having to click and move from one page to the other to find sites. And let me tell you, there is nothing wrong with any general directory when it comes to submitting sites. After all the way I look at it, general directories are great for backlinks. If you want better traffic, go to niche directories.

Sites by Domain Name is a very interesting niche directory to say the least. You will not find categories or sub-categories on this directory. In fact, you will find that it is not niched to say blogs or forums only. Instead it is as stated very interesting in that the categories are listed alphabetically and by TLD’s (tld=top level domain). The top 6 TLD’s only are here, from the .biz to the .org’s.

This is how this directory operates, very simple to understand and submit your site. When submitting a site to the Sites by Domain Name directory, you take the FIRST letter of your domain (eg: yourdomain.com would be y) and the TLD of your domain (in the example, .com). Then you submit it to the category that has the letter Y and the .com TLD. But pay attention to the guidelines of this directory, as I see you can not add a free blog, a deep linked site url as it must be the main url only, nor any sub-domained url.

I got to say that I enjoy country specific or regional specific directories. A directory that is niched to one country, like this one is to France, is a super source of material about the country. No need hunting down sites of interest for a country, when a good country specific directory has all I need to get tons of information about that particular country. How about you, do you rather enjoy going to a country specific directory when hunting for information? Of course you do, and if not, now is the time to learn that these niche directories are super and will save you a lot of time.

The France Directory is all about a country that everyone knows about, but everyone knows little about. The directory is also about a country that is the birthplace of my grandparents, La Belle France. At this directory, you will find the categories and sub-categories are well laid out, making it so much easier to find specific sites in the area you want to explore. Going to France on business or personal vacation? Then visit this directory first to find excellent sites that will guide you to the best places to visit, the best accomodations to stay at, and of course the best places to eat great French Food.

There are even categories and subcategories about the many different regions of France, from Brittany to the Pyrenees. Where and how to hire vehicles to travel around France, and trains to use with their schedules. All together, this France Directory is loaded with all the sites with all the information you need. I recommend visiting this directory soon as you will enjoy it as I have.

Site promotes $60 reserve domains to help get them listed in auction.

Getting a domain listed in Sedo ’s domain auction can be a big win for domain owners, especially if their domains are generic. (See “When Should You Send a Sedo Offer to Auction?“)

There are two ways to get a domain listed in Sedo’s auction. One is to submit it to an account manager or to the monthly Great Domains auction. You have to have good domains with low reserves to get accepted. Another is to receive an offer on your domain and send it to an auction with the offer as the reserve price. But waiting around for an offer is never a good sales strategy.

Enter PushToAuction.com, which lets domain owners promote domains listed at Sedo that they agree to send to auction if someone makes a $60 offer on it. Users can look for domains that look reasonably priced at $60 or above and submit a bid at Sedo. The bidder makes a legitimate offer on the domain and the seller agrees to send the domain to auction after receiving the offer. This is no different than setting a $60 price expectation on Sedo, except that you get more promotion for the domain — it doesn’t get lost in the sea of 11.5 million domains at Sedo.

It appears to be working for some sellers. According to the site, these domains used the service and sold for over $400:

iooa.com $950
6jt.com $610
pafl.com $650
exo.mobi $400

You may see a pattern here: short, generic domain names.

Michael Sumner and Bogdan Nastea of DomainRaiders.com launched PushToAuction.com about 7 weeks ago.
