A lot of free directories try to make money from Adsense on them but fail to get much revenue out of adsense. I got a guest blogger and adsense expert Hendrik Kleinwächter to write about the topic and he was generous enough to make a video.

Using AdSense for your directories can monetize your traffic quite well. To monetize your directory traffic completely you have to use the right colors and placements for your ads. It all depends on psychology like in your local shopping mall.

Summing the video up

  • Use rectangles in your directory
    • Don’t use horizontal banners
  • Use the AdSense heatmap for proper placings.
  • Blend your AdSense units
    • Title = blue (#000080 seems best)
    • BG = your website’s background color.
    • Border = same as background color.
    • Text = your website’s text color.
    • URL = same as the text color.
  • Place ads on your top visited websites
  • Think about what your user does on your website

Hendrik and Mark are offering AdSense consulting services, helping you to up your AdSense revenue drastically.

Great suggestions. People need to pay more attention to the AdSense Heatmap as you recommend. AdSense has skin in the game–people need to remember that. They create that Heatmap to help you.
